Training course floats locals boat

Published Wed 27 Oct 2021

Wrapping up in mid-September, the course was designed to give young people the opportunity to learn about powerboating and become competent, responsible skippers delivered by Yachting WA RST Assessor, Digby Edwards and Australian Federal Police Members.

Upon the successful completion of the course, the students received A WA Recreational Skippers Ticket.

Christmas Island Officer in Charge, Detective A/Sergeant Scott Burger said the course was an excellent opportunity to engage with the community and form strong relationships with the young people on the island.

'Building and maintaining trust between the residents and police here on Christmas Island is a long standing goal ,and it is always a priority to seek opportunities to positively engage with the local community.

The participants all received a sun smart fishing shirt, a show bag, six theory lessons, one full practical day, and access to facilities at the Christmas Island Police Station to undergo the theory lessons.

As the course was such a success we've found out that Christmas Island Phosphates are going to provide an annual sponsorship so that we can run the course every year and continue to develop these important relationships with young people on the island.
