As restrictions start to ease in Metro Melbourne, we are hopeful that the Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series (PPWCS) can go ahead anticipating a full five race day calendar in 2021 - 2022. The first race the Shirley Freeman Memorial Trophy is planned for November 28th at Hobsons Bay Yacht Club.
WinterSail 2021 was a great success, 33 registered entries for the event which was a good number based on the fact we were coming out of a 4th Covid lock down in Melbourne and NSW was going into an extended one making everyone nervous re the event even happening.
ORCV Winter Series kicked off with 45 competitors out on Port Philip enjoying some close racing after the conclusion of the lockdown period last Saturday. It was a race of 17 nautical miles sailed in tricky light-winds where boat speed can make any sailor a tactical genius, and the aim of the game on Saturday was certainly to settle the boat and pick the right sails.
The fleet of 41 enjoyed a cool but sunny day on their run to Apollo Bay, with a breeze that turned fickle in the closing stages of the race. Whilst many yachts enjoyed a smooth run to Cape Patton, only a few managed to escape the wind shadow of the Otways, and make it to Apollo Bay before dark.
The passion for short-handed sailing is well alive in Melbourne sailing scene with James Russell on his Adams 10 yacht, Surprise (SM63) being crowned overall winner in a fleet of 33 starters. A glorious autumn day, races within a race and a sunfish sighting, all made to what could only be described as the magic of a carnival for community who attended.

Wow - what a weekend! With warm weather and wind predicted the entrants to the 2021 Bullen Merri Easter regatta all arrived early and the camp ground was almost full for Thursday night. This year there were over 70 boats with this year the biggest fleet being the fireballs.

Aidan Simmons of Indented Head Yacht Club was crowned the Victorian Optimist State Champion earlier this month, after holding off 30 other competitors in the open fleet at the Victorian Optimist States hosted by Royal Yacht Club of Victoria.
Daniel Edwards’ White Noise has blitzed the field in the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s 49th Melbourne to King Island Yacht Race, taking out AMS, IRC, PHS and ORCi categories, while Paul Buchholz’s Extasea took line honours after settling into the race when the southerly eased in Bass Strait, giving all a nice ride to the finish. Winners take home King Island delights including crayfish.
