Statement from Yachting Queensland regarding Special General Meeting

Published Fri 17 Nov 2023

As we consider a pivotal decision for Yachting Queensland – our proposed reorganisation with Australian Sailing (AS) – I wish to share some thoughts based on my extensive experience in the yachting community.

Having been actively involved in club committees, boards, and multiple class associations for over 25 years, my interactions with both Yachting Queensland (YQ) and Australian Sailing formerly Yachting Australia have been overwhelmingly positive. This experience leaves me optimistic about our potential under a more modern, streamlined structure.

However, recent developments necessitate a careful approach to our proposed integration. This move, envisioned to simplify access for Queensland clubs to AS services and support must be thoughtfully considered to ensure it serves our community's best interests.

Regrettably, several unresolved questions and concerns raised by stakeholders have come to light. These issues are too significant to overlook or hastily resolve without thorough understanding. Hence, in the interest of transparency and informed decision-making, the Board of YQ have unanimously agreed to postpone the Special General Meeting scheduled for the 21st November 2023 into 2024. This delay will allow us to address all queries comprehensively, ensuring every member can make an informed decision.

Additionally, we must express our disappointment regarding the recent lobbying tactics. It's concerning to learn about behind-the-scenes lobbying by certain conservative members, occasionally marred by misinformation. Such actions contradict our values and the democratic principles we cherish.

In my years of service, I have always valued openness, fairness, and collective progress. As such, we advocate for a postponement of the vote, advocating for a period of detailed consultation and clarity. This approach aligns with our commitment to a democratic and transparent decision-making process.

Let's work together to ensure that any decision made is in the best interest of the Queensland sailing community, reflecting our collective wisdom and experience. I am confident that, with the right approach, our partnership with AS will continue to be fruitful and positive, just as my personal experiences with both organizations have been.

Thank you for your dedication to Yachting Queensland and for considering this important matter with the seriousness it deserves.

Yours sincerely

Kerry Noyes

YQ President
