Australian Sailing NSW Events 

The three main events run by Australian Sailing in NSW are the NSW Youth Championships, the Club Conference and the Annual NSW/ACT Sailing Award Presentation. EOIs for clubs to host these events are currently open and I thank the clubs that have already submitted a response. 

Australian Sailing is seeking expressions of interest from affiliated clubs to host the following events:

NSW Youth Championships

A three day coaching clinic and three day regatta held on the October long weekend

  • Date - 27 Sept – 2 Oct 2023
  • Number of attendees – Approx 235 sailors in 170 boats of 10 classes – 29ers, 420s, ILCA 6, ILCA 4, Flying 11, Manly Junior, Optimist, Open Skiff, IG Foil, Techno 293
  • Facilities required – National championship regatta level of facilities, please call for more information, you can also check out the youths website here.

NSW Club Conference

  • Proposed date and time - 13 May 2023 9am - 5pm
  • Number of attendees - 120 approx
  • Facilities required - Function room with AV equipment, chairs and tables for approx 120. Catering - lunch, morning and afternoon tea. Car parking and proximity to public transport a plus.
  • Submit EOI by 9th December

NSW/ACT Sailing Awards Presentation

(Informal cocktail party event)

  • Proposed date and time - 16 September 5pm - 8pm
  • Number of attendees - 100 approx
  • Facilities required - Function room with AV equipment, a few chairs and tables. Catering - finger food and bar. Car parking and proximity to public transport a plus.

National Sailing Awards

Congratulations to the NSW Members who won National Sailing Awards

  • Youth Sailor of the Year - Evie Saunders, Manly Yacht Club
  • Offshore Sailor of the Year - Lisa Blair, Manly Yacht Club / Cruising Yacht Club of Australia
  • Male Sailor of the Year - Tom Slingsby, Gosford Sailing Club
  • Club of The Year - Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club

Sport Infrastructure Recovery Fund

The Sport Infrastructure Recovery Fund is part of the NSW Government’s flood recovery commitment which will repair, rebuild and improve community assets damaged by the floods. The $55 million Sport Infrastructure Recovery Fund will provide much needed financial support to those in our sport and recreation sector impacted by the NSW severe weather storms and flooding from 22nd February 2022 onwards.

Local Sport Grant Program

The Local Sport Grant Program aims to support grassroots sporting clubs to increase participation, host events, improve access and enhance sport and recreation facilities. Up to $4.65 million is available in 2022/23 to support sporting organisations across NSW with $50,000 available in each electorate and grants of up to $10,000 available for individual projects.

Female Friendly Community Sport Facilities Grant Program

The NSW Government has committed up to $25 million to the Female Friendly Community Sport Facilities and Lighting Upgrades Grant Program (the Program). The Program investment will revive sport facilities by providing new and redeveloping existing sport facility bathrooms and change rooms. Funding will also support the provision of new and upgraded lighting that will enable more women and girls to train and compete in sport in a safe and inclusive environment.

ACT Sport and Recreation Grants Program (SRGP)

Strategic Review of the SRGP

In June 2021, McLaughlin Sports Consultancy (MSC) was engaged to undertake an independent review of the SRGP. An outcomes summary paper including recommendations, as well as the ACT Government response to the Strategic Review is available on the Sport and Recreation website.

Sport and Recreation Grants Program Review and ACT Government Response

Australian Sailing took part in the review process, strongly advocating for more funding for sailing in the ACT. The ACT Government have released their draft Sport and Recreation Strategy for 2023-2028 and the implementation plan is due to be released in early 2023.

Youth InterACT Scholarship

The Youth InterACT Scholarship provides funding of up to $500 for individuals, or $1,500 for groups of young people to participate in an activity, event or program including participating in sporting activities. Scholarships may also help to cover resources, equipment and materials to stay engaged in learning or training.

What will a Youth InterACT Scholarship fund?

  • Course fees and/or course expenses.
  • Travel expenses to attend an activity/event outside the ACT. For example: represent the ACT at the Australian Youth Volleyball Championships.
  • Registration costs to participate in an activity/event. For example: to participate in a Basketball Competition.
  • Accommodation costs to attend an activity /event outside the ACT. For example: to attend School Sports Association Championships in Tasmania.
  • Representing the ACT in sporting or other activities, or to be a part of an ACT based program. For example, to compete in dance competition.
  • Resource and/or equipment to sporting or recreational activities. For example: training camp.

Applications for Youth InterACT Scholarship are open all year.
