Wild Weekend on the Water: Impulse from Queensland Claims Victory Amid Gusty Chaos
Published Fri 14 Nov 2025
There may not have been an official report, but few who were there will forget last weekend’s sailing action. With both the Impulse and OK Dinghy fleets sharing the water, conditions delivered everything from light breezes to wild gusts — testing sailors and rescue crews alike.
Around 20 boats from each class hit the start line, with a plan to run three races on Saturday and two on Sunday. But Mother Nature had other ideas.
Just one minute before the first start on Saturday, the steady north-easterly turned into a warm, gusty north-westerly, forcing race officials to reset the course. Winds built to over 20 knots at times, keeping competitors on their toes — and the course boats busy. Despite the conditions, two races were completed, along with “a whole bunch of rescues,” all handled successfully by the support crews.
Sunday began with light winds, but sailors soon faced another dramatic shift as a strong south-easterly change swept through. Temperatures dropped sharply, and gusty winds once again turned the racing into a battle of skill and stamina. Only about half the starters managed to finish, but two more races were completed to wrap up the series.
When the spray settled, an Impulse sailor who had travelled all the way from Queensland claimed the overall title. As the day wound down, stories of the weekend’s wild conditions grew taller than the waves themselves — helped along, of course, by a few well-earned refreshments.
It was a challenging, exhilarating weekend that reminded everyone just how unpredictable — and unforgettable — sailing can be.
