WA Sailing Squad November 2020 Update
Published Tue 08 Dec 2020
In the Windfoiling fleet we had several WASS sailors competing in their first State Title since being announced as an Olympic Discipline for 2024. The regatta was held at MBSC over two Sundays with WASS riders Harry and Jack Joyner battling it out at the front with WAIS rider Caelin Winchcombe. Caelin eventually got the better of the fleet taking out the 2020 State Title. Harry ended up in second place and first youth rider, with Jack in third and second youth rider.
The level of the Windfoil fleet has really jumped up over the winter and now coming into summer it will be a great chance to keep building the depth in the fleet and keep pushing the performance at the front. If any sailors are interested in taking up windfoiling, many of the clubs are starting up windsurfing programs for those with sailing experience with the idea of being able to either eventually transition to the foils or windsurf alongside your sailing. Get in touch if you are interested!
The Lasers had their State Titles last weekend at FSC where all three fleets managed six races in classic seabreeze conditions. In the 4.7 fleet, Stew Gifford from FSC was strong in the breeze winning five of the six races to take out the title, he now leads the WASS Rankings going into December. Antun Janekovic and Dominic Beer were second and third respectively and are hot on Stew’s heels.
In the Radial Fleet, WAIS sailor Stefan Elliot Shircore ended up with a picket fence of race wins with Elyse Ainsworth in second place and first female. Pat Scally placed and impressive third which is a reward for his consistency in his training of late. Keep getting those legs and core stronger Pat and you’ll be even faster again soon! Caitlin Shaw finished up in 4th place overall and second female, a personal best for Caitlin I believe, well done. Recent Radial transitioner Lili McAullay fought hard in the windy conditions to finish third female. Lili like most of the fleet is another one who will benefit from some more hard work getting stronger and fitter to hike the boat down and go faster, a real Laser fundamental.
Coming up we have fitness testing for the squad on the 3rd of December. A great opportunity for the squad to check in with how they are improving physically and really let rip.
On water we have the ICR regatta at RFBYC on the 12-13th of December, the 29er States 4-8th Jan SoPYC, FSC Laser Cup 4-8th Jan and the Goolugatup Carnival Youth Regatta 10-14th Jan SoPYC.
See you on the water soon!
