Volunteer Spotlight - Port Kembla Sailing Club
Published Wed 29 Apr 2026
Port Kembla Sailing Club is a vibrant and active volunteer sailing and social club on the northern shores of Lake Illawarra in NSW ('pleasant place by the sea').
On Saturday, 11 April 2026, Port Kembla Sailing Club paid tribute to three very special volunteers - Glenda Curry, Gail Grant and Sylvia Ledger - recognising their decades of contribution to the club.
In a fitting honour, the club named three RS Vision learn-to-sail boats after them, ensuring their legacy will continue on the water for years to come.
Over several decades, Glenda, Gail and Sylvia have worked tirelessly in the club’s canteen - with Sylvia still actively involved today - producing thousands of hamburgers for hungry sailors. Their efforts have become a well-known part of the club’s identity, often summed up in the phrase: “Port Kembla Sailing Club was built on hamburgers!”
Beyond the canteen, the trio has also played an important role in fundraising and maintaining the club’s vibrant social activities, contributing significantly to the strong community spirit that exists today.
All three women are life members of the club, as are their husbands, who have also been instrumental in supporting and running Port Kembla Sailing Club over many years.
What sets Glenda, Gail and Sylvia apart among the club’s life members is that they were not sailors themselves - unlike many who volunteer their time. Their recognition highlights the vital role that non-sailing volunteers play in the ongoing success and culture of the club.
