Located along Victoria’s iconic Surf Coast, Apollo Bay Sailing Club sits at a natural midpoint for travellers journeying the Great Ocean Road. The town is a popular destination for campers, holidaymakers, and day visitors, particularly during peak holiday periods. This unique location presents a strong opportunity to introduce sailing to new audiences while also strengthening participation among the local community.

The club’s recent growth and transformation has been driven by the Discover Sailing Development Project, proudly funded by the Victorian Government through the Strengthening Regional Community Sport Grant. This vital government investment has enabled Apollo Bay Sailing Club to significantly expand participation opportunities and strengthen its long-term sustainability as a regional sporting organisation.

Becoming an Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Centre has been a natural and strategic fit for Apollo Bay Sailing Club. While the club benefits from seasonal visitation, its overarching objective through the Discover Sailing program is to build sustainable, year-round participation and increase the number of local sailors. The program has enabled the club to broaden its reach beyond traditional membership pathways and provide structured, accessible entry points into sailing.

Importantly, the Discover Sailing program provides an additional and reliable revenue-raising stream for the club. This income directly supports the expansion of existing programs, investment in equipment, and the long-term sustainability of club operations. The increased visibility associated with Discover Sailing branding has also strengthened the club’s ability to engage with local government, DEECA, and community stakeholders, positioning Apollo Bay Sailing Club as an active and well-governed community sporting organisation.

A key catalyst for the club’s recent growth was the generous donation of three OziOpti class boats from Mount Martha Yacht Club. This donation immediately accelerated the club’s Discover Sailing ambitions by providing purpose-built, junior-friendly training boats without the significant upfront capital cost. The availability of these boats allowed Apollo Bay Sailing Club to commence structured junior and introductory programs sooner than anticipated, creating momentum and confidence within the club. This example of collaboration between sailing clubs highlights the strength of the sailing network and the tangible impact that shared resources can have on regional and developing clubs.

The Discover Sailing Centre status has also opened new advertising and promotional opportunities. The club is now better positioned to promote programs through Australian Sailing channels, local tourism networks, schools, and council communications. This increased exposure helps convert visitors into participants while reinforcing the club’s presence within the local community.

Apollo Bay Sailing Club is a relatively small club with clear aspirations to grow. The Discover Sailing program supports this growth in a measured and sustainable way, allowing the club to scale participation in line with its volunteer capacity and facilities. The club already operates a successful junior sailing program, which has formed a strong foundation for this project. The Discover Sailing initiatives directly support and enhance this junior pathway by increasing participation numbers, improving coaching structures, and providing clearer progression opportunities for young sailors into club racing and ongoing membership.

Looking ahead, the club has a strong intention to engage local schools and introduce sailing as an accessible outdoor education and recreation option for students in the region. School programs represent a significant opportunity to connect with local families, diversify participation, and embed sailing as a long-term community activity rather than a purely seasonal or tourist-based experience.

Beyond participation outcomes, the project has delivered substantial improvements in club governance and operational capability. To meet Discover Sailing Centre requirements, Apollo Bay Sailing Club has strengthened policies, procedures, and risk management practices. This has resulted in clearer roles for volunteers, safer program delivery, and increased confidence when engaging with partners, insurers, and funding bodies. These governance improvements will continue to benefit the club well beyond the life of the project.

Overall, the Discover Sailing Centre project has provided Apollo Bay Sailing Club with the tools, structure, and confidence to grow participation, strengthen governance, and build a more sustainable future. The combination of increased visibility, collaborative support from other clubs, enhanced junior pathways, and improved operational standards demonstrates the significant value of this investment for both the club and the wider sailing community.

The impact of this funding will continue to benefit the Apollo Bay community for years to come!
