Introducing a More Inclusive Way to Sail: Try Radio-Controlled Yachts
Published Thu 09 Oct 2025
A New Pathway for Lifelong Involvement in Sailing
Australian Sailing is excited to launch a new, inclusive initiative aimed at increasing lifelong participation in sailing through Radio-Controlled (RC) Sailing programs.
With the support of the Queensland Government’s ActiveKIT funding, this two-year project will open up sailing to more people than ever before—through accessible, welcoming, and low-impact community experiences.
This initiative gives clubs across Queensland the chance to explore the emerging and exciting world of radio-controlled sailing. Using small, easy-to-handle DF65 RC yachts, clubs will host ‘Come Try Days’ and other activities that promote inclusive, quality sailing experiences in a fun, social, and safe environment.
This will make it easier for clubs to include:
-
Older adults looking to stay active
-
People with limited physical abilities
-
Newcomers who are curious about sailing but not ready for traditional formats
-
Volunteers and community members seeking new ways to get involved
RC sailing is fun, affordable, and accessible. It removes many of the physical and financial barriers associated with traditional sailing, while still offering all the excitement, strategy, and social connection that make sailing great. This program gives clubs a chance to explore this growing trend while strengthening community engagement and club membership.
Australian Sailing has purchased 12 DF65 remote-controlled yachts, which have been designated on loan to 5 clubs in SEQld & 5 clubs in NQld. Between September 2025 and June 2026 these clubs will promote remote-control sailing activities such ‘Twilight Sailing’ to members and the local community. Look out for these activities at the following clubs.
-
Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron
-
Mackay Sailing Club
-
Port Douglas Yacht Club
-
Humpybong Yacht Club
-
Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club
-
Douglas Sailing Club
-
Darling Point Sailing Squadron
-
Queensland Cruising Yacht Club
This project is about more than just trialling a new sailing format—it’s about embedding inclusive, community-first practices into everyday club life. With ongoing support and resources, we aim to see these programs flourish long after the initial project ends in June 2026.
