SailLAB in Regional NT

Published Wed 14 Oct 2026

Australian Sailing recently visited Nhulunbuy to assist Gove Boat Club to deliver some SailLAB Days. Both Nhulunbuy Christian College and Dhupuma Barker School delivered SailLAB through Term 3 and finished up with a SailLAB Day. Due to the remoteness of GBC and lack of human resources Australian Sailing was able to tie their annual trip and provide some extra manpower to deliver to SailLAB Days.

This project was made possible with the assistance of funding via an Inspired NT STEM Grant. The grant funding covered the purchase of 4 x DF65 and 1 x SailLAB Wind Kit which can now be kept at GBC and loaned to local schools delivering the program. The grant has also enabled Australian Sailing to adapt the SailLAB program to better suit remote indigenous schools throughout the NT and beyond in the hope that more will take on the SailLAB program as a fun way to introduce STEM to their students.

Initial feedback from students and teachers has been positive with further sailing days booked with GBC beyond just the SailLAB program. For any clubs unsure about the program reach out to your local AS staff for more guidance and jump on board as it’s a great way to engage and inspire your local community about our sport.
