About the role

Reporting to the Membership Experience & Partnerships Manager, the Race Officer is responsible for the safe, fair, and enjoyable conduct of sailing races at RMYC. This role is central to delivering quality racing experiences for members and guests, ensuring compliance with the Racing Rules of Sailing and club policies.

What you will do

  • Race Management
    • Lead the planning and on-water management of club races and regattas.
    • Assess weather and safety conditions; postpone, cancel, or abandon racing if required.
    • Conduct pre-race briefings for competitors and volunteers.
    • Set and adjust race courses to suit conditions and event requirements.
    • Ensure all race documentation (Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions) is followed.
    • Oversee the start and finish procedures, scoring, and results submission.
    • Manage the Race Management Team (mark layers, committee boat, finish boat, scorer/handicapper).
    • Ensure competitor and team safety, following club risk management and emergency procedures.
    • Liaise with club staff and volunteers to ensure all equipment is prepared and maintained.
  • Communication & Leadership
    • Provide clear instructions and leadership to staff and volunteers and the race management team.
    • Communicate effectively with competitors, club staff, and officials.
    • Attend protest hearings and respond to scoring enquiries as required.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Participate in ongoing training and accreditation (Australian Sailing Race Officer courses).
    • Promote best practice and consistency in race management.
    • Support the development of new volunteers and officials.
  • What you bring
    • Accredited Australian Sailing Club Race Officer (or willingness to obtain).
    • Sound knowledge of the Racing Rules of Sailing and race management procedures.
    • Experience in keelboat or dinghy racing (preferred).
    • Powerboat license and experience operating large powerboats (preferred).
    • Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency (preferred).
    • Current Advanced First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
    • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
    • Ability to lead and motivate a team.
    • Commitment to safety, fairness, and club values.
  • Success Measures (Specific KPI’s to be set at bi-annual performance reviews)
    • Safe and fair conduct of all scheduled races.
    • Positive feedback from competitors and volunteers.
    • Accurate and timely race results and documentation.
    • Compliance with club and Australian Sailing standards.
    • Ongoing personal development and accreditation.
