Get new members sailing with SailPass

Published Mon 12 Jan 2026

Launched in 2019, SailPass has been a key driver behind increased club membership and safety improvements at clubs across the country. With the sailing season well and truly upon us, now is the time to implement SailPass at your club to give non-members the chance to experience sailing firsthand and get involved in social racing, regattas or major events.

Why SailPass?

SailPass gives non-members the opportunity to try sailing at your club at a reduced or no cost while also allowing them to get the feel for a club before doing a course or becoming a club member. It’s an easy, fun, and flexible way for the non-member to get out on the water, learn new skills, while enjoying the lifestyle and amazing locations provided by your sailing club.

It’s a short-term, introductory membership (usually for a single day), that allows non-members to participate in club sailing activities. Think of it as their ticket to try sailing without the pressure of long-term commitment.

With SailPass increasingly more popular at clubs Australia-wide, now is the time to take the leap and use it to sign up non-members for their first sailing adventure!

So, what are you waiting for? Have a look at the SailPass website today for more information.

For Clubs: Why Implement SailPass?

If you're a club decision-maker considering introducing SailPass, you’re on the right track. Australian Sailing offers a range of resources, guidelines, and best-practice recommendations to help you make the most of it.

Here’s how SailPass benefits your club:

  1. Grow Membership
SailPass provides an online system to capture the names and contact details of people who are not club members and are participating in your races. Now you know who they are, you know what to do. Contact them and invite them to join.
  2. Grow Participation
If they don’t want to join your club just yet, that’s okay. Instead, invite them back to go sailing again. You’ve got such a great club, they’ll love it.
  3. Grow Volunteers
They might want to get involved in the club behind the racing. Invite them to an information evening about volunteering or a training day for the race committee. The good ones will love protest committees.
  4. Increase Sales
Because you have their contact details, promote the club’s offerings. Whether it be hall hire, fancy functions or a Sunday schnitty, tell them about it.
  5. Improve Safety
By using SailPass, you don’t just collect contact details for the casual participant, you collect emergency contact details. Pretty handy if it hits the fan.
  6. Mitigate Impact
When a casual participant is registered with Australian Sailing, they enjoy the Personal Accident Insurance cover. Sure, this does not reduce the likelihood of an accident, but it provides a financial safety net for the affected person and their family. Also pretty handy if things go wrong.
