South Australia Showcases Sailing Excellence Over Summer
South Australia proudly hosted a series of national sailing events across December, January, and February, highlighting the strength of our sailing community and the quality of our clubs. Congratulations to the hosting clubs for delivering outstanding championships that showcased the leading facilities, race committees, and dedicated volunteers we have in South Australia.
The national events calendar included the Australian Sharpie Nationals at Port Lincoln Yacht Club, the 125 Nationals at Coffin Bay Yacht Club, SKATE National Championships at Ceduna Sailing Club, the Mosquito and Taipan Catamaran Australian Championships and the Fireball Australian Championships at Adelaide Sailing Club, the 51st Tasar Nationals at Wallaroo Sailing Club, Flying Fifteen Australian Championships at CYCSA and the TS16 National Championships at LBSC.
Attending these events, it was amazing to see club collaboration at its best, with volunteers stretching from all our SA Clubs to assisting host clubs.
In addition to hosting success, South Australian sailors demonstrated exceptional performance at events across the country. Congratulations to our National Champions. Luke, Matt, and Ryan in the Australian Sharpie, Mal and Jess in the International 505, Finlay Bunt in the Aero 5 and Craig and Gill in the Tasar.
Outstanding youth performances were also recorded, with Toby Phillips (Optimist) and Calin Went (International Cadet) qualifying for their respective class World Championships. SA Performance Sailors Ben Hinks and Fallon Katz achieved second place in the International 470 and Mixed National Championships, while female skippers Erin Sims (Tasar) and Ellen Sampson (ILCA 6) delivered standout performances, further underlining the depth of talent within South Australian sailing.
South Australian were glued to trackers to watch as our SA Sailors took on the 2025 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
We were proud to have four South Australian yachts from CYCSA and RSAYS competing in the 2025 Sydney to Hobart in Clockwork, Inukshuk, Cool C4ts, and The XX Factor. Unfortunate damaged to Inuksuk meant early retirement, while Janet and her XX Factor crew celebrated on crossing the line for her first Sydney to Hobart.
Special recognition must also be given to our volunteers, with outstanding callouts to NRO Laura Hughson and NRO Malcolm Hughes for successfully running multiple events with their teams over the summer period. As well as SA Judges NJ Lisa Bettcher and NJ Tracy Heritage being available to support our host clubs.
Their leadership and commitment were instrumental in the success of these championships.
These achievements reflect the strength of our clubs, the dedication of our volunteers, and the continued development of sailing talent across the state.
