A highlight of the Australian Sailing calendar, Discover Sailing Month is once again making waves at sailing clubs across the country this November.

Designed to introduce individuals and families to their local clubs through free events and open days, the initiative offers an inviting and accessible way for newcomers to experience the thrill of sailing and take their first steps into the sport.

Western Australian club, Koombana Bay Sailing Club (KSBC), is one of many hosting Discover Sailing Days, with their next upcoming event taking place on Saturday, November 22, from 10am to 12:30pm AWST.

For Peter Midgelow, Training Coordinator at KSBC, their upcoming Discover Sailing Day is the perfect opportunity for newcomers to try their hand at sailing.

“The idea of the event is to generate a bit of interest in the sport, a chance for the local community to come down and try sailing. Newcomers can expect sunshine, fresh air, and the camaraderie of the sailing club,” Peter said. "There is also a competitive side to it, which can be good fun”.

Last year was a busy one for the club, and Peter hopes this season will be just as exciting. This year, KBSC has two Discover Sailing Days planned, one in November and another in February.

“We hope these days generate enough interest in people to continue sailing, and particularly to inspire the younger generation in our local community.”

The event is open to all ages from 8 and up, and participants will get hands-on experience in a variety of boats, including KBSC dinghies, keelboats and catamarans.

Whether you’re drawn to the competitive racing side of sailing or just want a fun day on the water, Discover Sailing Day is a fantastic way to dip your toes into the sport. With a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of friendly faces, it’s a great chance to explore a new hobby and maybe even make some new friends along the way.
