Discover Sailing Centre in Focus: Westernport Yacht Club

Published Wed 27 May 2026

Nestled on the shores of Balnarring Beach in Victoria, Westernport Yacht Club has been fostering a welcoming and passionate sailing community since its establishment in 1960. As one of the original clubs selected to trial the Discover Sailing Centre program in 2007, the club has played an important role in introducing generations of sailors to the sport.

With a membership base of around 300 people, Westernport Yacht Club caters to a diverse community of sailors, power boat users, families and social members. The club delivers a range of accredited Australian Sailing programs including Tackers 1, 2 & 3, along with Start Sailing 1 & 2 courses, helping participants of all ages build confidence and skills on the water.

The club’s Tackers program continues to be a standout success story. Entering its 20th season in January 2027, the program has introduced hundreds of children to sailing over the years. Beginning with just 15 participants in its inaugural season, the program grew to as many as 80 sailors per season before the COVID-19 pandemic, and now continues to attract around 30–40 participants annually.

A key figure behind the longevity and success of the program has been Marg Douglas, whose dedication and leadership have helped shape the club’s junior pathway for nearly two decades.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the program for the club has been watching former Tackers participants return as qualified instructors and assistant instructors, creating a strong cycle of mentorship and community involvement. Many of the young people now helping deliver programs at the club first stepped into an Optimist through Westernport’s Tackers courses.

Westernport Yacht Club prides itself on being a friendly and inclusive club where sailors of all experience levels can feel supported. Following their courses, participants are encouraged to continue sailing through the club’s Greenfleet program, where they can access club boats, practice alongside experienced sailors and gradually become involved in the regular Sunday racing program.

This ongoing support both on and off the water has seen several recent participants become active members of the club’s racing fleet, helping strengthen participation and retention within the club.

Over its 65-year history, Westernport Yacht Club has also established a strong reputation for hosting major regattas and producing talented sailors, including State, National and International champions. Most recently, the club successfully hosted the 2025 ILCA Masters National Titles, welcoming 120 boats to the event and bringing together volunteers and members from across the club community. The club is also preparing to host the upcoming Taipan Nationals this summer.

Like many sporting organisations, the club has faced challenges in recent years, particularly through the COVID-19 pandemic and in maintaining participation among teenagers and young adults. In response, the club is re-establishing its “Younger Set” group, led by younger members to encourage engagement, retention and social connection within this age group.

With a proud history, passionate volunteers and a strong focus on creating lifelong sailors, Westernport Yacht Club continues to demonstrate the important role Discover Sailing Centres play in growing sailing communities across Australia.
