Hobsons Bay Yacht Club has been offering ‘Learn to Sail’ events since 2022 and is now embedded as an important part of club operations.  

Running a multitude of Discover Sailing classes for all ages, Club Manager Rod Austin said it’s been a valuable resource for establishing a pathway for those who are eager to learn.  

“It streamlines the learning experience, ensuring that participants receive consistent high-quality instruction and guidance as they develop their skills on the water,” he said.  

Hosting a Discover Sailing Day once a year at the club, this event encourages those interested in sailing to come and give it a try. Rod said the event highlights several important benefits, from boat owners sharing their vessels and enthusiastic volunteers playing a pivotal role in ensuring newcomers receive guidance and support. 

“There’s immense satisfaction in witnessing the excitement and joy of individuals, both young and old, new to sailing as they take to the water for the first time,” he said. 

Rod said the event serves as a valuable opportunity to welcome the broader community to the club, showcasing what the club has to offer and creating lasting connections.“Through our Discover Sailing Day, we not only promote the love of sailing but also strengthen our club’s sense of community and inclusivity.” 

In 2024, a member embarked in their sailing journey by signing up to a course which ignited their passion for the sport. Their enthusiasm also inspired his spouse to enjoy the club and explore the world of sailing. Initially, she expressed an interest to sail socially, however she is now a regular crew member on another member’s boat and enthusiastically participates in the sailing community week after week. 

Rod said this trend of women participating in sailing at the club has been notable. “Over the past year, we have made a concerted effort to attract more women to the club and this initiative has proven successful, resulting in a greater representation of female participants in our courses.” 

This has resulted in offering female-specific courses at the Discover Sailing Centre. They are led by a qualified female instructor and have seen participation increasing 100% each year. 

“The demand for these courses continues to rise, reflecting the positive impact of diverse and inclusive offerings within our club,” Rod said.
