Club in Focus: Kingston Beach Sailing Club (KBSC)

Published Tue 02 Feb 2021

The Kingston Beach Sailing Club (KBSC) is a small volunteer run off the beach club located at the southern end of Kingston Beach at the mouth of the Derwent River, Hobart, Tasmania.  The club boasts some of the best sailing in Australia with views to match.

Founded in 1954 by a small group of sailing families to provide sailing in a safe & friendly environment, KBSC is now an Australian Sailing accredited Discover Sailing Club.

After many years of static membership (around 93) there has been a recent increase to 165, with approximately one third of the membership female, and half juniors. This is partly due to a weekday school program and building of kayak storage at the clubhouse. All members have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of our sport including running races, rescue, as well as sailing.

SheSails is supported at the club with all females given opportunities to learn and participate in all events from running races to instructing.

KBSC offer a range of adult and junior sailing lessons to the public which provides a great opportunity to experience the fun of sailing in a safe environment. Tackers is run over three levels from October through to the Easter period. Programs are also run for high school students from Calvin Christian School and Green Fleeters.

KBSC host standard Pennant and Trophy races and also run Match and Teams racing, and Adventure Sails. For Match and Teams racing in Pacer Dinghies, beginner and intermediate crews are paired up with experienced sailors as part of learning about these other disciplines. KBSC are very proud of all those who have sailed with us and gone on to win Australian Championships, placed well in International events and become leaders in many fields.

In the last couple of years, substantial work has been done on refurbishing the deck of the clubhouse, as well as adding on a kayak storage shed with the help of a government grant. A further grant has been submitted to upgrade the changerooms.

The club support Optimists, Sabots, Open Skiffs, Mirrors, Lasers, and B14s and have Pacers available to hire, so if you are in the area be sure to pop in and enjoy a sail!
