Club in Focus: Adelaide Sailing Club (ASC)

Published Thu 03 Sep 2020

The Adelaide Sailing Club was born out of the amalgamation of the Glenelg Sailing Club and the Holdfast Bay Yacht Club in November 1998. The combined age and history of both clubs is over 200 years providing a strong foundation of knowledge and respect amongst other South Australian clubs.

This amalgamation resulted in the creation of a state-of-the-art sailing and club venue ‘purpose built’ to maximize the sailor experience. The club offers extensive lawned rigging and storage areas, protected off the beach launching, deep water harbour access and car parking, all within the West Beach Parks holiday accommodation precinct and directly adjacent to the Adelaide Airport.

Adelaide Sailing Club is an off the beach club supporting junior, youth and senior classes, single handed, crewed and multihull classes. The ASC is an AS accredited Discover Sailing Centre and combines their Sailing School activities with their Discover Sailing Activities throughout the year. ASC also have a protected deep water harbour launching facility which supports small keel boat classes, sports boats and Sailability classes.

The Adelaide Sailing Club proudly has a fleet of Hansa Class yachts used primarily by their local fleet to conduct an annual series of Sailability sessions each year. These sessions are free to the participants and is supported by the strong volunteer base of the club and on-water support craft etc. ASC are the only club on the SA metro coast with the capability of launching and retrieving these boats and also have a sheltered harbour and dock area to greatly assist in managing the disabled sailors safe access to the boats. A representative of the SA Sailability community is a life member of ASC and a current serving club committee member.
ASC is strong advocate and supporter of Sailability in South Australia and their involvement with disabled sailing is not only a difference between their club and others, but one of their key success pillars, identified in their current Strategy development process.

ASC has the provision of all hospitality services being undertaken by their business partners ‘Oceanique’. This partnership allows ASC to focus on its strengths in on/off water racing and regatta management while their hospitality partner supports the social side of the club, especially during regattas where in-house welcome night and presentation night functions are taken to new level of professionalism and service.

Member / member achievements:
ASC has on average 250+ members with an increasing number of volunteer and social members. Of this approximately 150+ are sailing members.
ASC has a current emphasis on building junior and family membership numbers in line with their developing Strategy 2025 by offering a consolidated sailing development pathway from Tackers and Sailing School programs right through to junior and senior club sailing.

Since its inception in 1998 The Adelaide Sailing Club has hosted two world championships, both in 2004 the International Fireball and the International Cadet World Championship regattas were sailed from ASC in the waters of Gulf St. Vincent.

The Adelaide Sailing Club annually hosts National Championship regattas; some recent regattas include:

Without a doubt Adelaide Sailing Club volunteers are one of the clubs greatest assets so ASC put great emphasis on their volunteer program. Their Vice Commodore leads their large volunteer pool (60-70 people), each season ASC aim to run a volunteer day (1/2 day) where all volunteer practices, procedures and policies are outlined and updated with their volunteers.

To overcome challenges in membership growth and retention ASC has undertaken a variety of ‘Try Sailing / Discover Sailing Day’ activities. These initiatives along with their Sailing School, Sailability Program and 'every day is come and try day' approach has seen their introductory participation levels grow throughout the past 12 months.

Like many other successful sporting clubs, families and the next generation of members is important to the ASC club and its culture. ASC currently have multiple fourth generation sailors in their junior ranks and look forward to seeing more generations take on the family sport of sailing in the future. Their efforts to make their ‘come and try’ days open to the public and members as a 'member fun day' has attracted young member families to bring their kids and grandkids along. Consequently we are watching a new group of very junior sailors enter the club environment with generational family support with noteable cases of grandparents buying their grandchildren boats to enable them to continue their early journey into sailing.
