Australian Sailing is mourning the passing of former President, Mr Bruce Ian Dickson AM. Dickson was President of the Australian Yachting Federation as it was known then from 1996-2000, and was a respected administrator, yachtsman and lifelong contributor to the sport of sailing in Australia.
Dickson oversaw the governing body at a crucial time, helping guide the organisation through a significant period of transition and growth in the lead-up to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. His leadership helped strengthen the national administration of sailing and positioned the sport for a new era in Australia.
A passionate advocate for sailing at all levels, Dickson was widely recognised for his commitment to modernising the sport’s governance and fostering stronger connections across clubs, classes and state associations. During his presidency he played an important role in supporting Australia’s Olympic sailing ambitions and advocating for the profile of sailing nationally.
Beyond his national leadership, Dickson made an enduring contribution through his service to several key sailing organisations. He was a Commodore and Life Member of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, served on the Board of Yachting NSW (including time as President), was on the Federal Council of the Australian Yachting Federation from 1982 to 1990 before joining as a Board member from 1991 to 2001.
Dickson was also instrumental in the growth of inclusive sailing in Australia. Through his leadership with Sailability Australia, including serving as Chair of the National Sailability Committee, he championed opportunities for people of all abilities to experience the joy of sailing.
In recognition of his outstanding service, Dickson was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday 1998 Honours List for Service to Sport in the administration of Sailing and Yachting at state and national levels, received the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 and was bestowed Life Membership of Australian Sailing in 2003.
Australian Sailing President Shevaun Bruland said Dickson’s contribution to the sport would be fondly remembered by the many who knew him.
“Bruce Dickson was a highly respected figure whose leadership, integrity and passion for sailing helped shape our sport nationally,” Bruland said.
“He gave generously of his time and expertise over many decades and leaves behind a remarkable legacy, not only through his governance and advocacy, but through the opportunities he helped create for sailors of all backgrounds and abilities.
“On behalf of Australian Sailing and the wider sailing community, we extend our sincere condolences to Bruce’s family including wife Diana, daughter Catherine, son Robert, daughter-in-law Kathryn, and grandson Harry, his many friends and all who had the privilege to work and sail alongside him."
Bruce Dickson’s dedication to sailing, both on and off the water, leaves a lasting mark on the Australian sailing community.
