Australia Claims Silver at Youth Match Racing World Championship
Published Fri 26 Jun 2026
After a week of intense racing in the Danish heatwave, Australia's Daniel Kemp and his crew delivered a superb performance to claim Silver at the 2026 Youth Match Racing World Championship, with the title decided only in the final 200 metres of the fifth and deciding race.
Extreme temperatures matched the intensity on the water, as 12 teams from 11 nations battled through light and shifting winds across 104 races. Despite the challenging conditions, the race committee successfully completed the full championship schedule.
The Australian team sailed consistently throughout the regatta to secure a place in the final against the United States after progressing through the knockout stages.
Ranked second in the world, Kemp and his crew pushed the Americans all the way with the gripping five-race final tied after four races setting up a winner-takes-all showdown. Australia fought back after receiving a pre-start penalty and at one stage held the lead while successfully completing the penalty turn. However, the Americans regained the advantage just before the final windward mark and held on to claim the world title.
For Australian skipper Daniel Kemp, the silver medal reflected both pride in the team's campaign and the disappointment of coming so close to Gold.
"Morgan gave us a penalty in the pre-start, but we managed to fight our way back. Even though we managed to do our penalty while we were ahead, Morgan and his crew fought their way back. Right now the result stings a little, but I am sure that we will be happy about the result in a couple of weeks," Kemp said moments after the final race.
The United States crew of Morgan Pinckney, Kelly Holthus, Cam Spriggs, Jacob Posner and Alice Schmid secured the world championship after a hard-fought victory.
Host nation Denmark completed the podium, with skipper Mathias Rossing leading his team to bronze after recovering from a difficult semi-final.
The championship showcased the next generation of international match racing talent and highlighted the importance of providing young sailors with opportunities to compete on the world stage.
