2026 VIODA Organic Garden Intl. Optimist Victorian & Open Champs

Published Mon 16 Mar 2026

More than 80 young sailors took to the waters off Royal Brighton Yacht Club during long weekend in March for the 2026 VIODA Organic Garden International Optimist Victorian & Open Championship, highlighting the strength and growing momentum of grassroots sailing in Victoria.

The regatta brought together sailors across three fleets: the welcoming Green Fleet for those new to racing, the Intermediate Fleet for developing competitors, and the highly competitive Open Fleet, where experienced sailors battled it out for championship honours.

Competitors travelled from far and wide to take part. Sailors from Singapore joined participants from New South Wales, South Australia, and Queensland, with many families flying in or driving long hours to compete on Port Phillip’s famously unpredictable waters.

Racing across the first two days delivered fantastic sailing conditions, with winds ranging between 12 and 20 knots. Sailors navigated gusty shifts and waves, demonstrating impressive tactical awareness, resilience and boat handling as the race committee successfully completed a strong series across all fleets. By the end of Day 2, competitors had been thoroughly tested and were poised for a decisive final day of racing.

One of the most encouraging highlights of the regatta was the strong female participation, particularly within the Intermediate Fleet where close to one-third of sailors were girls. This growing presence of young female sailors reflects a positive shift within the sport and signals an exciting future for diversity and representation in sailing.

The Optimist class continues to represent the true grassroots of sailing, introducing young athletes to the sport while building confidence, independence and lifelong skills. Many of today’s top sailors first learned to race in an Optimist, and the expanding fleet in Victoria shows the pathway remains strong.

The event also showcased the outstanding venue at Royal Brighton Yacht Club, recently recognised as Victorian Club of the Year at the Australian Sailing Awards. The club will again be at the centre of youth sailing when it hosts the 2027 Optimist Australian National Championships in January 2027.

For many of these young sailors, the weekend was about more than results. It was about building confidence, forging friendships across borders, and embracing the challenge of wind and waves — experiences that will shape the next generation of sailors for years to come.
