Multicultural Communities

Multicultural Communities

Australian Sailing is committed to making sailing welcoming, safe and inclusive for people from all cultural, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Clubs and class associations play an important role in ensuring people from multicultural communities can discover sailing, feel a sense of belonging and participate in ways that are meaningful to them.

Creating an inclusive environment starts with understanding your local community, recognising different experiences and making it easier for people to get involved.

Supporting Multicultural Participation

Clubs and class associations can take practical steps to welcome people from multicultural communities and encourage greater participation in sailing. Consider how your club or class can:

Understand your local community

  • Learn about the cultural and linguistic backgrounds represented in your local area.
  • Engage with multicultural organisations, community leaders and local groups to understand their interests, needs and potential barriers to participation.
  • Seek feedback from new and existing participants to help shape your club's activities and enhance the welcoming nature of your club.

Educate and Support Club Members

  • Provide coaches, officials, volunteers and members with guidance on cultural awareness and inclusive practices.
  • Encourage respectful communication and challenge stereotypes or assumptions about people from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Help club members understand how cultural differences may influence participation, communication and comfort within the sailing environment.

Build connections and a sense of belonging

  • Partner with local multicultural organisations, schools and community groups to introduce sailing to new audiences.
  • Encourage existing members to welcome new participants and help them become familiar with club activities and sailing culture.
  • Recognise and celebrate the diversity of your club community through events, communications and activities.
  • Ask participants about their experiences and use their feedback to improve future programs.

Make sailing accessible and welcoming

  • Promote introductory sailing activities, club discovery days and learn-to-sail programs to people who may not have previously considered sailing.
  • Explain how to get involved, including costs, equipment, clothing requirements and what participants can expect.
  • Consider language barriers when sharing information, and use clear, accessible communication wherever possible.
  • Create opportunities for people to try sailing in a welcoming, supportive and low-pressure environment.
