Tips to support people with vision loss plus Sailing Session Guide

A representative from vision Australia visited the State Sailing Centre in Victoria on the 14th of April, the following week the instructors ran a session for a group with a variety of levels of vison loss. Before producing a customised sailing session in hansa dinghies and Pacers at albert park lake the instructors attended a theory session in which they were able to use technology and materials to better understand the perspective of the participants.

Communication – Hand Signals

Communicating with your participants can be difficult when its windy or you have an engine close by. Think about where you position yourself, upwind and out of direct sunlight is most helpful. Try to communicate with sailors using a clear voice, and without shouting.

Fun knot Challenge Session for Kids and Teens

Often it’s fun to end a knot tying session with a fun challenge, whether it’s with the classic tie up the instructor (Only done if there is another assistant/ instructor present) or a game. A fun way to change things up is with a problem solving challenge like a knot challenge to stimulate the mind.

Please become a volunteer if you have the time. It is very rewarding while you are learning so much about Race Management. There are different tasks to learn which are very important especially when starting and finishing races and then keeping an eye on the fleets during the race/races.  Such a friendly atmosphere on the Committee Boat and I find it very rewarding
