Wing Program

FIND A CLUB COURSES FOR CLUBS & CENTRES

Grab a wing. Feel the pull. Find your next adventure.

The Australian Sailing Learn to Wing Program is your introduction to wing sailing — using a handheld inflatable wing to move across the water on a stable board.

No sailing experience is needed. Learn to Wing builds the fundamental skills of powering, steering and balancing with a wing, on boards clubs already have on hand — stand up paddleboards and stable windsurf boards.

It's fast-growing, low-impact and a natural stepping stone toward wing foiling, once you're ready to add a foil beneath your feet.

No matter where you're starting, there's a place for you in the Wing Program.

Your wing journey starts here

Learn to Wing is a short, self-contained pathway — a taster session, then a full course that builds your fundamentals on a non-foiling board, before you're ready to progress toward wing foiling.

Why learn to wing?

Wing sailing strips things back to the essentials — no boom, no mast, just a handheld wing, a board and the wind. It's intuitive to pick up, easy on the body, and gives you an immediate feel for how wind moves you across the water.

It's one of the fastest-growing disciplines in the sport, and a genuine stepping stone: the balance and board skills you build here carry straight across if you decide to progress to wing foiling down the track.

Learn with Australian Sailing

Learn to Wing courses are delivered by Australian Sailing accredited Instructors at Discover Sailing Centres nationwide.

Any current Dinghy, Windsurfing, Powerboat or Keelboat Instructor — or Sailing Coach — can complete the free Wing Instructor endorsement, so you're taught by instructors who genuinely know the discipline.

Keep sailing

Completing the Learn to Wing Course is only the beginning. From here, progress toward wing foiling, join your local club, or explore other Australian Sailing programs like Dinghy, Windsurfing or Keelboat.

Your next adventure starts on the water.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Got questions about the Wing Program? Here's everything parents and guardians need to know before getting started.

It's Australian Sailing's introduction to wing sailing. You use a handheld inflatable wing to move across the water while standing on a stable board. The program builds the core skills of powering, steering and balancing with a wing.

Wing-surfing is similar to windsurfing. An inflated wing powers you along, but unlike a windsurfer's sail, the wing isn't attached to the board. You hold it and control it with your hands while you stand.

The only difference is the board. Wing-surfing is done on a stable windsurf board or stand-up paddleboard (SUP). Wingfoiling uses a board with a hydrofoil underneath. Learn to Wing gives you the skills to progress to wingfoiling later.

No. No prior experience is needed, and everyone can give it a go.

You must be water confident

Learn to Wing Experience: A single taster session of about 3.5 hours. You'll get up on the board, go across the wind, turn around and come back, with assistance in a safe, supportive environment.

Learn to Wing Course: The first step on your winging journey. It builds on the Experience over about 9 hours across multiple sessions. You'll learn to get up on the board, control the wing confidently and turn.

Learn to Wing runs on stable boards that clubs and centres already have, such as SUPs and stable windsurf boards.

Prices are set by each Discover Sailing Centre. Check the course listing for your local centre's price.
