Appeal Process

Follow the process outlined below to appeal the outcome of your decision:

Step 1) Check the Deadlines

If you intend to lodge an appeal, the following timeframes and processes are important:

  • Request a written copy of the protest committee's decision after receiving the verbal decision
    • Within 7 days of receiving the verbal decision
  • Lodge your appeal after receiving the written decision
    • Within 7 days of receiving the written decision

Step 2) Submit Your Appeal

Complete the Appeal Application Form below and upload all required supporting documentation (outlined in the Appeal Application Form).

Your written appeal must explain why you believe the protest committee incorrectly interpreted a rule or did not follow the correct procedures.

Step 3) Wait for Australian Sailing to Review Application

Once your application and supporting documents have been submitted, Australian Sailing will be notified.

Under Rule 70 of the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), Australian Sailing will determine whether your appeal meets the requirements to be considered valid.

  • If your appeal is valid: Australian Sailing will notify all parties involved and invite them to submit comments within a specified timeframe.
  • If your appeal is not valid: Australian Sailing will notify you.

Step 4) Appeal Panel considers valid appeals

If the appeal is accepted by Australian Sailing, we will constitute an Appeal Panel consisting of five judges.

The panel will review the appeal and any comments submitted by the parties. It may request additional information or comments before making its decision.

Step 5) Final Decision communicated to all parties

Once the Appeal Panel has reached a decision, the panel chairperson will send it to Australian Sailing.

Australian Sailing will then communicate the final decision to all parties involved.
