About The Club
Woollahra Sailing Club is a leading community sailing organization committed to delivering high-quality sailing programs in a safe, inclusive, and professional environment. The Sailing School is central to the Club’s participation strategy, supporting junior pathways, youth development, and adult learn-to-sail programs.
Position Overview
The GM is directly responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership across all areas of the Woollahra Sailing Club. In collaboration with the WSC Board, they ensure sound governance, deliver membership benefits, and develop sailing and paddling pathways.
The GM will lead and develop a strong culture within the Woollahra Sailing Club community and drive engagement with a range of members and key sector stakeholders, as well as ensuring the club is financially managed and effectively aligned with the local community.
This position plays a critical role in the future sustainability and development of the club, supporting increased participation in sailing and paddling, developing instructors, and supporting participant progression.\
Key Accountabilities
- Board & Governance
- Provide high-quality and timely advice to the WSC Chair (Commodore) and Board at all times
- Oversight of all Board Committees
- Ensure appropriate governance policies are in place that are regularly reviewed and benchmarked against best practice
- Stakeholder Management
- Develop and maintain effective partnerships with key sector stakeholders including members, Australian Sailing, Woollahra Council, and the Sydney sailing and paddling communities.
- Identify opportunities with external entities to create mutually beneficial partnerships.
- Develop and foster an effective voice at the local, national, and state levels.
- Leadership
- Lead, motivate, and inspire the Woollahra Sailing Club paid and volunteer workforce, ensuring the development of a high-performing, empowered community that effectively and efficiently delivers the WSC strategy and objectives within a nurturing and inclusive culture.
- Lead the WSC staff team, ensuring strong communication and awareness of the club's strategic and operational deliverables.
- Provide leadership with strong communication and clear direction to staff and volunteers.
- Drive and embed a strong culture within the WSC that is supportive, inclusive, and encourages recognition.
- Be an advocate for the sailing and paddling communities.
- Strategy & Planning
- Working collaboratively with WSC Members and community stakeholders, drive the development and sustainable growth of the club.
- Lead, in close consultation with the Board, the Strategic Plan to integrate within the whole club environment and report annually on the WSC deliverables.
- Provide oversight for the delivery of an operations plan and budget to achieve the WSC Strategic Plan.
- Play a key role in developing strategies to innovate, ensuring the club continues to remain sustainable and relevant to sailing and paddling communities.
- Financial & Risk Management
- Ultimately responsible management of the WSC budget, in consultation with the Board
- Working closely with the WSC accountant, ensure the timely and accurate preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, and financial reports to the Board.
- Oversight of the balance sheet and the P&L (short- and long-term) to ensure the financial viability of all operations.
