UniMelb Sailing Team Secures Back-to-Back Victory at Australian University Team Racing Nationals

The University of Melbourne sailing team has once again demonstrated its dominance on the water, claiming back-to-back titles at the Australian University Team Racing National Championships. 

The winning crew - Matty Goss, Finn McMahon, Cam Berry, Lewis Vandam, Hugh Knights, Nikhil Nanayakkara, and Tharen Nanayakkara - showcased exceptional teamwork, strategy, and determination throughout the regatta, ultimately earning them the coveted national title for a second consecutive year. 

The university had two teams competeat the competition. The second University of Melbourne crew came fifth overall. One of the sailors from the second team is in the running for Instructor of the Year at the 2025 Australian Sailing Awards - Lucas James. He was joined by Pierre Giggins, Tom Johnston, Katherine Stevenson, Peter Wan and Zack Wang.  

The 2025 UniSport Nationals were held on the Gold Coast, Queensland and saw over 6,000 athletes from across the country battle it out to be crowned national champions in 32 different sports. 

The team’s victory on the water continues the University of Melbourne’s proud sailing tradition and highlights the growing talent in Australia’s university sailing scene.
