Training Regatta brings Sailors Together at Lake Fyans

Sailors from clubs all across western Victoria came together earlier this year for a weekend of learning, racing and community at the Stawell Yacht Club, with a training regatta designed to support newer and developing sailors.
Held on the picturesque shores of Lake Fyans, the weekend provided an opportunity for sailors of all ages and experience levels to build confidence on the water while connecting with the growing sailing community in regional Victoria.
The training regatta focused on helping less experienced sailors develop their racing and boat-handling skills in a supportive environment. On-water coaching, short training races and group debriefs allowed participants to learn from each other while gaining valuable experience in a regatta setting.
Perfect sailing conditions and warm weather made for an ideal weekend on the lake, while the club’s camping facilities created a relaxed and social atmosphere off the water. Many sailors and families camped on site, sharing meals and stories while building friendships that extend well beyond the sailing course.
Events like this play an important role in strengthening the sailing community across western Victoria, helping new sailors progress from introductory programs into club racing and regional regattas.
The weekend was made possible with support from the Strengthening Regional Community Sport Victorian Government Grant, whose investment in grassroots sport continues to help regional sailing clubs provide opportunities for people of all ages to get involved in sailing.
By supporting training initiatives, coaching opportunities and community events, the Victorian Government is helping clubs like Stawell Yacht Club grow participation and ensure sailing remains accessible across regional communities.
For many participants, the training regatta was not only about improving their sailing skills, but also about experiencing the welcoming and community-focused culture that regional sailing clubs are known for.
With enthusiasm high following the successful weekend on Lake Fyans, organisers are already looking forward to future training opportunities that will continue to grow the next generation of sailors in western Victoria.
