SailLAB, Australian Sailing's national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education program, is connecting schools with the sport of sailing through hands-on learning experiences. Earlier this month, Pimlico State High School in Townsville participated in the in ion with the students. Participants were enthusiastic, inquisitive and eager to paugural North Queensland SailLAB program. 

Twenty Year 10 students took part in the two-day program, delivered by Townsville Sailing Club with support from Australian Sailing. Set against the stunning backdrop of The Strand and Breakwater Marina, students enjoyed an engaging introduction to sailing while applying STEM learning in a real-world environment. 

Bringing SailLAB to regional Australia helps create greater access to sailing and on-water learning opportunities for young people outside major cities. It ensures students in regional communities have the same chance to explore the sport, discover maritime pathways and gain practical experiences as their metropolitan counterparts. 

Throughout the event, students rotated through three learning stations: radio-controlled boats, STEM-based classroom activities, and off-the-beach dinghy sailing. Supported by their teachers, Australian Sailing staff, dedicated club instructors and volunteers, they embraced every challenge. From reading the wind and steering a dinghy to trimming sails and understanding the forces that propel a boat, participants gained valuable insight into both the practical and scientific aspects of sailing. 

The experience sparked strong interest among the students, with many eager to learn more about the sport and several expressing interest in continuing their sailing journey through programs offered by the club. 

It was particularly rewarding to see experienced club volunteers and instructors generously share their knowledge and passroblem-solve throughout the program, demonstrating strong engagement across both the on-water and classroom activities. 

The program explored a range of STEM principles, including physics, aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, environmental awareness and analytical thinking. Designed to spark curiosity, build confidence and encourage critical thinking, the activities highlighted the skills and knowledge that underpin many careers within the maritime industry. 

SailLABprovides an innovative way to bring STEM learning to life through sailing. By integrating the program into school curricula, it creates meaningful connections between students, local sailing clubs and the broader maritime sector, opening doors to future education, club involvement, training and career opportunities.
