Queensland is Continuing the Officials Development Plan

Published Fri 01 Aug 2025

A successful year putting the Officials Development Plan into action by providing support to participants in gaining practical experience and completing their qualification assessments has resulted in the following achievements.

  • 1 Judge upskilling to National Judge

  • 1 Race Officer upskilling to National Race Officer

  • 2 Race Officers upskilling to Regional Race Officers

  • 3 Officials gaining event experience to gain some way towards the events level requirements for their next accreditation level

  • 1 Race Officer now ready to apply for regional accreditation

Two Regional/National Race Officer Seminars were also held – one in Central Queensland & one in SE Queensland – providing 20 participants with the opportunity to move down the pathway to gaining Race Officer accreditation.

In providing the tools and opportunities for participants to,

  1. Complete Final Assessments

  1. Enhance SkillsThrough practical learning and mentoring gaining hands-on experience at sailing events (shadowing more experienced officials or volunteering in a specific officiating role),

  1. Engage in Relevant EventsGain experience in various settings and at different event levels, thus broadening skillsets and exposure.

  1. Advance Regional Experience – Provide opportunities for officials to work in regions outside their home area.

We aim to elevate the overall standard of officiating in Queensland and ensure that the management of races is not only efficient but also fair, consistent, and safe. As officials gain more experience and qualifications, their ability to make informed decisions, manage complex situations, and lead races effectively improves, contributing to the success of sailing.

Due to the success last year, we will be continuing to offer this facilitating project by offering invitations to some new participants who wish to progress their officiating accreditations and will maintain a rolling list of around 10 participants.

Having highly skilled, competent, and confident race management professionals will in turn provide professional, higher quality racing in Queensland and these Officials will be well-equipped to contribute to the success of sailing events nationally. By investing in the development of these key individuals, we ensure the future of the sport remains safe, fair, and true to its competitive spirit.
