This year has marked significant progress for Discover Sailing Centres across Queensland. The following highlights showcase the achievements of some participating centres.
Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club – This volunteer-run club is making strong progress towards re-establishing itself as a Discover Sailing Centre. The club began with the Power Boat Program, delivering four courses and awarding completion certificates to 14 participants. It subsequently secured a fleet of Tackers boats through the Whitworths Scheme and scheduled its first Tackers 1 course for September. In addition, five Start Sailing courses have been delivered, with family groups taking advantage of the opportunity to learn to sail together. Discover Sailing Days have also generated significant interest in the club’s learn-to-sail programs, with more than 70 participants trying sailing activities.
Bundaberg Sailing Club – Bundaberg Sailing Club is preparing to expand learn-to-sail opportunities across the Wide Bay Burnett region. A recent Discover Sailing Day at the river-based club renewed community interest, and upcoming courses will provide Start Sailing options for adults and young people, as well as Tackers courses for children during October and November.
Townsville Sailing Club – This volunteer-run club has expanded its delivery of Powerboat Program courses this year and has also embraced the SailLab Experience Day. The club welcomed more than 40 students from a local school to participate in a rotation of activities, including sailing, remote-controlled sailing and land-based activities.
Darling Downs Sailing Club – Although it is not currently a Discover Sailing Centre, this welcoming club, located on a picturesque dam just outside Toowoomba, has recognised the benefits of hosting a Discover Sailing Day. Its event in November will give visitors the opportunity to try a range of dinghies, experience the club environment and discover the sport’s appeal. Events such as this are particularly valuable in regional areas, helping clubs showcase sailing, their natural surroundings and their family-friendly atmosphere.
Collectively, Queensland’s Discover Sailing Centres have welcomed more than 4,000 participants across a diverse range of learn-to-sail programs. These include Keelboat Start Crewing and Helming, OutThere Sailing, Tackers and Windsurfing, complemented by Experience sessions and Discover Sailing Days. Don’t forget that it is National Discover Sailing month this November!
