Port Kembla Sailing Club's Kembla Klassic

Published Tue 09 Dec 2025

Port Kembla Sailing Club's Kembla Klassic, held on the 29th and 30th of November, has been run and won for another year. The Wetas were having their State Championships over the two days, and the Sharpies had a round of theirs. A fleet of OKs and F18 cats joined us as well as a B14, Moth and RS800.

The wind on Saturday didn't cooperate, however, when the westerly hit the fleet right on start time. It quickly built to mid-30s knots, making the decision to abandon relatively easy. Sunday was somewhat better, with an earlier start and a late change of course, three races were completed, though many competitors came home for the last race which was held in a breeze building to the mid-20s.

With more time spent ashore than usual, it's important to have great food, drinks and facilities. The canteen pumped out the legendary hamburgers as well as the Saturday night BBQ dinner. With a large grassy rigging area large enough for camping, this regatta is one of the best on the calendar. We're rebranding next year's event as Sail Illawarra 2026 with some exciting changes to the format. In the past, we have hosted everything from foiling Moths to Herons, so if your association wants to hold a top-quality event for next season, book us in for the 28th and 29th of November 2026.
