The Opportunity

MYC is seeking Sailing Instructors and Coaches to deliver safe, engaging and technically strong on-water instruction across the club’s programs.

We are currently recruiting for three key roles:

  1.  Junior & Youth Sailing Instructor
  2.  Keelboat Instructor
  3. High Performance / Olympic Pathway Coach

These roles suit instructors who are passionate about developing sailors, value professionalism and want to work within a supportive, well-structured coaching environment.

All roles work under the direction of the Head Coach, in collaboration with the Sailing Manager and Training & Development Committee.



Role Streams

1. Junior & Youth Sailing Instructor

  • Deliver regular training sessions for junior and youth sailors
  • Focus on skill development, confidence, enjoyment and progression
  • Support sailors from introductory levels through to advanced club and regatta participation
  • Communicate clearly with sailors and parents

(This role contributes to MYC’s structured junior and youth pathway, including the SLM framework.)



2. Keelboat Instructor

  • Deliver keelboat instruction for training, participation and racing programs 
  • Support sailors transitioning from dinghies into keelboats
  • Assist with club racing preparation, skills development and confidence building
  • Contribute to adult learn-to-sail, skills clinics and pathway programs


3. High Performance / Olympic Pathway Coach

  • Deliver advanced, class-specific coaching for high-performance sailors
  • Support athletes preparing for state, national and international competition
  • Work closely with sailors on technical skills, race strategy and performance planning
  • Collaborate with the Head Coach to align HP programs with club pathways


Key Responsibilities (All Roles)

  • Plan and deliver safe, structured on-water instruction
  • Prepare session plans aligned with program objectives
  • Adapt sessions to suit conditions, sailor ability and development goals
  • Maintain high safety and professionalism standards at all times
  • Communicate clearly with sailors, parents and club staff
  • Work collaboratively with other instructors and coaches
  • Arrange a suitable replacement if unavailable and brief them on session plans
  • Support club initiatives such as regattas, camps and inter-club activities

 

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong sailing knowledge relevant to the role applied for
  • Proven instructional or coaching experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Professional, inclusive and positive approach
  • Strong organisational and planning skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a coaching team


Qualifications & Requirements

  • Australian Sailing Instructor or Coach Accreditation (appropriate to role)
  • Victorian Powerboat Licence & Powerboat Handling Certificate
  • Safety Boat Operator Certificate
  • Working with Children Check
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Previous club, state or national-level coaching experience desirable
