Instructors in Focus: Keelboat Instructors

Published Mon 16 Aug 2021

Being a Keelboat Instructor means having fun sailing on up to 10m keelboats while teaching participants of all ages the basic skills of our sport.

Keelboat Instructors use stable yet responsive vessels with a crew of up to 6 people. These crafts are on average less physical than Dinghies and allow Instructors to sit next to participants so they can provide feedback while sailing. These vessels are called Sport Keelboats for a reason though, more experienced crews will soon find out that these boats are no snails!

Course participants includes both teenagers, young and less young adults! Some participants might want to learn how to crew or skipper because they sail on others’ boats or because they want to sail their own boat. Some others simply want to experience sailing with friends for the first time. Anyway, Keelboat Instructors provide participants with a fantastic opportunity to safely learn to sail in a fun environment.

Keelboat Instructors mainly focus on teaching the basic sailing skills and theory notions thanks to an exhilarating mix of on and off water activities. Keelboat Instructors wanting to teach upper-level Keelboat courses need to register for a Keelboat Racing Instructor course and obtain the related Keelboat Racing Instructor qualification. This will allow them to teach more advanced sailors and develop their racing abilities to compete with other boats.

Accredited Discover Sailing Centres use only Australian Sailing qualified Keelboat Instructors to deliver their OutThere Sailing and Keelboat courses. This enables participants to learn effectively in a safe and enjoyable environment. For participants, instructors are the face of the Centre they work for and substantially influence customer retention and satisfaction. Behind successful Centres there are always successful Instructors!

Here some extra benefits of becoming a Keelboat Instructor:

  • There is no better feeling than working while having fun sailing!
