Lifting Skills, Lifting Teams: Inside the Instructor Upskill Program

Published Thu 26 Mar 2026

A fresh new training initiative has been introduced to Queensland clubs this season with the launch of the Instructor Upskill Program. This fun, hands‑on training boost is designed to lift confidence, refresh skills, and bring out the best in every Instructor. Tailored for each club’s Learn to Sail and Discover Sailing teams, it’s all about professional development, reflection, future planning, and growing together as a team.

What’s in the Session?

Here’s what instructors get to dive into:

  • Real‑time on‑water reviews
Working alongside a Senior Instructor for circular, in‑the‑moment feedback.
  • Practical updates & skill boosts
A chance to brush up on current best practice, try new techniques and games to keep teaching skills sharp and relevant.
  • Workforce planning & succession insights
Helping clubs develop stable, well‑supported teams prepared for future growth.

With a strong emphasis on FUN, SAFE, LEARNING, the program also reviews the EDICP teaching model and updated resources, while addressing any specific training needs identified by the Discover Sailing Principal prior to the session.

When instructors feel confident and enjoy what they do, it makes a huge difference in reducing participation barriers and building thriving club communities.

Oxley Sailing Club and South Brisbane Sailing Club have already completed the program and shared their positive feedback about the experience.

“It was great to get your feedback, suggestions and some fresh ideas within a ‘live’ environment, which is hugely valuable for our young instructor team. Us oldies learnt some useful things too” – Bec - OSC

“I would confidently say this is an outstanding example of how AS can assist clubs and I hope that you are able to make this a regular event, looking forward.” – Robert – SBSC

These workshops form a core part of our commitment to creating a welcoming and consistent entry experience into the sport. By supporting instructors with practical tools, reflective practice, and up‑to‑date teaching resources, the program aligns directly with the vision of the Participant Plan for Sailing in Australia.

This training complements our biannual Training in Focus – Live event, which is a great networking and professional development opportunity for all Instructors and Discover Sailing Principals. This year’s event will be held at Southport Yacht Club’s Oxenford Watersports Facility on Saturday, July 6.
