With the sailing season in full swing and the weather finally being kinder to us, we have an eventful time ahead. The RYCT is definitely looking at having no down time with three major national regattas coming up and of course, the Sydney Hobart. Australian Sailing will again have a presence at the Race Village to answer any questions about sailing and promote your Clubs, Classes and our great sport. Please come and visit and have a chat, I would love to see you.

Once again, Adventures of a Sailor Girl, Nic Douglass, will be at the RYCT on 31st December ‘Celebrating Women in Offshore Sailing’. This social event is open to anyone who supports female sailing and it is a time to celebrate ‘closing the gender gap’ and building lifelong sailors. The more the merrier, so please spread the word, share the link in your newsletters, and come and enjoy a very sociable morning (10am –12noon) and have a free coffee and some cake!

At the recent Australian Sailing National Awards in Sydney, Tasmania was very well represented as National finalists:

  • Club of the Year Category B – PDYC, Instructor of the Year - Samantha Bailey, Sport Professional Award – Colleen Darcey, Official of the Year – Ian Ross, and Chris Symonds winning the Para Sailor of the Year award for the 6th time.
  • Paul McCartney’s crew on Porco Rosso were acknowledged for their bravery efforts in last year’s Sydney Hobart. They were presented with the CYCA SOLAS Trusts Bravery Award for their successful rescue of Luke Watkins in treacherous conditions.

Tassie is so busy this summer that our AS Tassie staff will be working throughout the holiday season. Please be aware that the main AS Office will be closed from December 19th and reopen on January 5th. TAS AS staff will be based at the RYCT for the ILCA and Optimist Nationals from Jan 1st to Jan 15th, so come and say ‘hi’!

Good luck to all sailors who are competing over the summer, Merry Christmas to you all, and I wish you fair winds and lots of fun on the water.
