Discover Sailing Centre in Focus - Sandy Bay Sailing Club

Published Tue 26 Aug 2025

Sandy Bay Sailing Club (SBSC) has been part of the Tasmanian sailing community since 1948. Located on Long Point Road in Hobart, the club is perfectly placed on the Derwent River with picturesque views, where sailing conditions are available right off the beach.

The club runs a variety of Discover Sailing programs including Tackers 1 and 2, Green Fleet and the OutThere Sailing program, as well as Discover Sailing experiences in dinghy and windsurfing.

Vice Commodore Simon Hooper said the club becoming a Discover Sailing Centre was a natural fit.

“Providing Discover Sailing programs aligns with SBSC’s commitment to promote, encourage and facilitate the sport of sailing for the enjoyment of our members and our community,” he said.

With a strong focus on juniors, most participants are aged between eight and 13. On average, 15 children take part in Tackers each season, while Green Fleet welcomes five to ten sailors across Optimists and International Cadets.

SBSC has strong representation from both female and male sailors across all age groups and programs. This contributes to our focus on a family-first culture, Hooper said.

A unique feature of the club is the way it embraces opportunities for young sailors to learn from experienced sailors, providing inspiration for the next generation of sailors coming through.

“We establish programs that allow coaching of young sailors to be undertaken by experienced youth sailors. It also provided the youth sailors with invaluable coaching and communication skills that they can take into other aspects of their life,” said Hooper.

As the club continues to have a strong focus on participation and supporting all sailors in achieving their goals, their Discover Sailing programs are an integral part of the club.
