Celebrating the Wadley's: Volunteer Champions of Tinaroo Sailing Club
Published Fri 23 May 2025
National Volunteers Week is all about highlighting those who are the backbone of our sport. Roger and Annette Wadley are proof of how volunteers can have an incredible impact on clubs and communities which earned them the 2024 Australian Sailing - Queensland Volunteer of the Year award.
Over the past 15 years, Roger and Annette have been the heart of the Tinaroo Sailing Club, serving tirelessly to ensure its growth, success and sense of community. In 2024, their contributions were formally recognised with life membership - a reflection of their years of passionate and selfless service.
Roger has held the role of Commodore for the past six years, following three years on the club’s Management Committee. Annette has also played vital roles including six years as Secretary, four years as Treasurer and nine years as Membership Secretary. She continues to manage the club’s RevSport portal and has been instrumental in streamlining club operations.
What began as a way to introduce their children to sailing quickly grew into a full commitment to the club and wider sailing community. Their leadership has driven countless initiatives, from running regular training days and Learn to Sail sessions to managing logistics for the club’s annual May Day Regatta, which draws competitors from across the region.
Roger’s practical support has extended beyond the water. Whether he’s painting the clubhouse solo to ensuring rescue boat plans and club safety documents are up to date, Roger will make sure the job is done.
Annette has made a transformative impact through grant writing, securing over $360,000 in funding to improve the club’s facilities, purchase boats and safety equipment, and support volunteer training.
Together, they have cultivated a welcoming and supportive club culture that encourages participation at all levels. Their commitment has also helped foster the next generation of sailors with all three of their children going on to compete - and win - at World Championship level.
Their combined efforts have not only strengthened the Tinaroo Sailing Club but have had a ripple effect across the local community and sailing in Queensland. They exemplify the spirit of volunteerism - dedication, humility and a willingness to roll up their sleeves to make things better for all. Here’s Three Cheers for Roger and Annette!
