SailLAB Inspires Students Through Hands-On STEM Learning
More than 50 students from Applecross Senior High School swapped the traditional classroom for the Swan River this week, taking part in Australian Sailing's innovative SailLAB program at Royal Perth Yacht Club.
A total of 53 students participated in the immersive STEM-based learning experience, which uses sailing to bring science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts to life through practical, hands-on activities.
Throughout the day, students rotated through three learning stations designed to connect classroom theory with real-world sailing applications. On the water, students took the helm of DF65 radio-controlled yachts, experimenting with wind direction, sail trim and boat performance. They also stepped aboard Elliott 7 keelboats, sailing under the guidance of qualified instructors while applying their understanding of wind and movement in a dynamic environment.
Back on shore, students participated in classroom-based activities exploring topics including wind reading, pulley systems and hiking techniques, helping them understand the scientific and engineering principles that underpin sailing.
Applecross Senior High School STEM teacher Ngaire Lowry said the program's unique approach to learning was a major reason the school chose to participate.
"What attracted us to SailLAB was the opportunity to combine mathematics and science learning in a non-traditional environment," Ms Lowry said.
"Having access to facilities on the river is a fantastic opportunity and one that many students may not otherwise experience. It allows them to see STEM concepts applied in a real-world setting while also building confidence and teamwork skills."
The program has proven so popular among students that participation is offered exclusively to extension classes, providing an incentive for students to excel in their studies.
"Students were incredibly excited to be involved," Ms Lowry said.
"SailLAB has become a real drawcard for our extension students. It's an opportunity they look forward to and one that rewards their commitment to learning."
By combining classroom concepts with practical experiences on the water, SailLAB continues to demonstrate how sailing can be a powerful platform for education, inspiring the next generation of problem-solvers, innovators, lifelong learners and hopefully sailors!
Australian Sailing's SailLAB program is designed to introduce students to STEM concepts through sailing, encouraging curiosity, critical thinking and hands-on discovery while fostering a connection with the marine environment.
