Australian Sailing is thrilled to confirm that sailing will feature for the first time at the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games, to be held across the islands of Malta and Gozo.

The announcement by Commonwealth Sport today marks a historic moment for the sport, with sailing joining seven other disciplines on the Games program. Its inclusion reflects both the global growth of the sport and the strength of Australia’s youth sailing development pathway.

Australian Sailing CEO, Malcolm Page welcomed the news and acknowledged the significance of the event for the next generation of athletes.

"Australian Sailing is delighted at the news of our sport being included in the Malta 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games.”

Malta 2027 is expected to host around 1,150 athletes aged 14–18 from 74 nations and territories. The Games will be delivered across four major venue clusters, with two athlete villages providing world-class facilities and an unforgettable Games experience.

The inclusion of sailing offers young athletes a unique chance to compete internationally while showcasing the dynamic and challenging nature of the sport.

"This provides another fantastic opportunity for our youth sailors, and creates an exciting calendar of events alongside YouthSail, Youth Squad and the Youth Sailing World Championships as we look to generate greater interest and growth in youth participation numbers. As always it is an honour to represent Australia on the world stage, and I expect Australia will be represented at the regatta in 2027,” Page said.

Craig Phillips AM, Commonwealth Games Australia CEO said: “The Commonwealth Youth Games play a vital role in developing the next generation of athletes by giving them a unique opportunity to experience international competition in a multi-sport environment,” Phillips said.

“For many, it’s their first taste of representing Australia on the global stage, an experience that can shape their future in sport and beyond.

Australian Sailing looks forward to working with Commonwealth Games Australia ahead of the Games.
