Australian Sailing releases May 2024 Strategic Status Report

Published Mon 06 May 2024

In early 2022, Australian Sailing released our 10-year strategic plan, SAILING 2032

The plan was developed in conjunction with a range of stakeholders, including clubs, class associations, volunteers, staff, and Discover Sailing Centres. Implementing our Strategic Plan continues to drive the work and focus of Australian Sailing.

Throughout the lifespan of SAILING 2032, we will be reporting on the progress made on the Strategic Plan and we will publicly report on how we are tracking against our stated strategic targets. In the report, you will see the targets we set in the strategy, along with some of the wins we have had over the past 12 months.

Our May 2024 Status Report has just been released and we are proud to share some huge achievements from the 2023 calendar year with our members.

The Participation and Membership Growth Plan supported clubs in driving a 7.9% increase in membership in 2023. The work of the clubs and the Plan delivered a further increase in Discover Sailing Course participation enrolment by 14.67% in the 2023 calendar year.

Our Discover Sailing Centres (DSCs) continue to work hard to drive growth in participation, with effort rewarded as participation has seen further increase in the last 12 months.

Over 20,700 participants completed Discover Sailing courses at DSCs this year. Australian Sailing has accredited 163 Discover Sailing Centres to support the delivery of fun, safe and inclusive sailing for new and existing sailors.

Currently there are over 11,300 certified Instructors, Coaches and Officials and we welcome the newly trained people to deliver sailing together. The significant increase over the past 12 months is attributed to the new structure in officiating where modular e-learning has been strongly adopted to assist in training being accessible to more people nation-wide.

The 2023 Club Survey is a valuable tool for ensuring that Australian Sailing is meeting the expectation of member clubs. Over the past year, 59% of clubs responded to the 2023 Club Survey, which is an increase of 17% from the previous year.

Australian Sailing values the importance of clubs and our members and we visited 84% of clubs in 2023, a significant increase of 14% from 2022.

Australian Sailing president Alistair Murray AM expressed his delight about the achievements over the past year.

“The board and I are proud of the work that Australian Sailing has done to partner with clubs and classes to achieve these impressive results for sailing over the last 12 months,” Murray said.
