Thanks to funding from Change Our Game Hobson's Bay Yacht Club is excited to host a Women’s Keelboat Instructor course this September!

Australian Sailing is aiming to attract 10 women with previous sailing experience to upgrade their skills to become a Keelboat instructor. The course also aims to provide participants with the opportunity to create a knowledgeable and supportive professional network.

Australian Sailing is keen to attract more women to the sport of sailing. By becoming an instructor your skills will be highly sought after and you will enjoy rewarding and fun work with plenty of opportunities for further professional development. At the conclusion of the course you will be accredited under Australian Sailing to teach Keelboat courses at Discover Sailing Centres anywhere in Australia.

Taking place over two days, Saturday 3rd and Saturday 10th of September 2022, the course will focus on practical Keelboat instruction skills. If interested, you are invited to express your interest by completing this short application.

Course Overview

This course aims to teach women how to instruct the introductory courses of the Keelboat Program, including Start Crewing and Start Helming. Located at Hobsons Bay Yacht Club course participants will learn and practice effective techniques for both theory and practical instructing. Australian Sailing will provide a Senior Instructor who will provide participants with continuous feedback and support.

Course Prerequisites

  • Be 18 years old and Water Confident
  • Comply with the State/Territory legislation including, but not only, child protection laws (if applicable in that state)
  • Hold the level of competence in the Program they wish to instruct
  • Hold a current Australian HLTAID003/011 - Provide First Aid Certificate (or higher)

Prerequisite Learning

Who should do this course?

This course is for women (aged 18 and over) with previous sailing experience, a passion for sailing, and for teaching others. Keelboat Instructor participants must attend both course days (from 9am-4pm) at Hobsons Bay Yacht Club.

To ensure Australian Sailing meets the funding criteria this is an expression of interest process. Applicants will be notified by Australian Sailing if their application has been successful. Payment of the $50 fee (non-refundable) will then confirm your registration in this course.

Cost

Due to Change Our Game grant funding this course cost will be provided at a reduced cost. There is a nominal $50 fee, which includes lunches on both days.

Course Outcome

The course aims to develop skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • General Instructing skills - communication, planning, risk management
  • Fundamental sailing skills - tacking, gybing, man overboard recovery
  • Professional support network with links to She Sails and other experienced instructors

Successful participants will gain the Keelboat Instructor qualification and be qualified to deliver up to the Keelboat Program at Start Crewing and Start Helming Level at Discover Sailing Centres.
