Overview

If you hold an equivalent overseas instructor qualification you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Dependent on the qualification you hold and the country of issue, you may be required to undergo an assessment of your instructor skills and complete an instructor orientation.

You must prove the currency of your overseas qualification and your previous instructing experience. If your qualification has expired, inline with the country of issues currency policy, you must complete the Australian Sailing Instructor course of your revelant program.

If you hold an instructor qualification from one of the countries below, you may be eligible for direct RPL accreditation and only have to complete the Instructor General Principles online course, prerequisites must also be met:

  • UK (RYA qualifications)
  • Ireland

Countries that are accepted, but will require an assessment include:

  • Fédération Française de Voile
  • Canadian Yachting Association
  • US Sailing
  • Yachting NZ

Qualifications from other countries will be reviewed upon application.

Prerequisites

  • Must be 16 years-old

  • Water confident

  • Hold an Australian First-aid certificate (HLTAID003 Apply first-aid or above)

  • Hold a current Australian Working with Children Check (Please click here for details on your state/territories requirements)

  • Hold an Australian Powerboat Handling Certificate 

  • Complete the Australian Sailing online Instructor General Principles course

Who can apply for RPL?

The RPL process is for anyone who holds an equivalent level Keelboat sailing qualification.

The RPL Process

  1. Candidate applies via registering for the RPL 'course', pays the money and submits all associated evidence.
  2. Within the course confirmation email the applicant will receive the Instructor General Principles link to complete the online training.  
  3. Australian Sailing will then review the application and identify if an assessment is required.
  4. If it is deemed an assessment of your instructor skills is required, a regional Club Services Officer will liaise with yourself and a Senior Instructor to coordinate a suitable time and date for an assessment. These can occur in metro areas in each State.
  5. Prior to the assessment you must complete the online Instructor General Principles.
  6. If no assessment is required you will be required to complete the Instructor General Principles prior to the qualification being recommended.

Outcome

Pending your success (which may include a face-to-face assessment), you will gain the Keelboat Instructor qualification.
