Colin Beashel Announced Flag Bearer for 2004 Olympic Team
Star class sailor Colin Beashel (AIS/NSWIS) has been named flag bearer for the 2004 Australian Olympic team, and will lead the Aussie contingency into the stadium for the opening ceremony on Friday night.
The announcement was made tonight (Athens time) at the team welcome reception, which was attended by the entire Australian team, as well as many famous past Olympians. Sydney 2000 flag bearer, Basketballer Andrew Gaze, officially handed the flag over to Colin during the reception.
After the announcement Beashel commented, 'I am delighted and honoured to be named flag bearer by the AOC'.
Beashel's Olympic achievements includes six Olympic Games, including a Bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games, which he won with crew mate David Giles (AIS/NSWIS). He was also part of the successful 1983 American's Cup crew.
The team welcome reception also featured Delta Goodrem singing the national anthem.
Colin and crew member David Giles will begin competition on Saturday 21st August.
