Mike Fletcher “on” a Record at Athens

Mike Fletcher
Tony Cable , Tuesday, 3 August 2004

“Coach” or “Fletch” as he is known, will be coaching the Finns and Tornados. This would be news in itself to proudly relate of this C.Y.C.A. member since 1970.

But Mike will also break an Australian record, by being a Coach in 8 Olympics. He takes this achievement on from Don Talbot (swimming) who retired after Sydney, with 7 to his credit.

Now, if the above two paragraphs have not said enough, then add that Coach is 70!

I was startled that my “old”, fit friend was actually 70 and asked him. “How then, he felt participating in this elite competition?” He gave me this thoughtful answer.

“ When you look at a mirror you can say, ‘ who is this guy.’ But it is when, from the inside looking out, at the 25 or 35 year olds you are coaching, that you become only as old as they are.”

Mike was in two minds as to whether he should march in the Opening Ceremony probably modestly thinking he as “only” a Coach. I think Australians would like to feel that this great sportsman has no choice in the matter.
