Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race

Tuesday, 25 March 2008

Pouring rain, freezing temperatures and minimal visibility dogged runners on Mt Wellington as the 20th Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks wound up this morning.

The podium finishers wrapped up the race for overall honours yesterday, but Victorian Beneteau Aphrodite, skippered by Gerard Sormann, was the first monohull and cruising division boat to finish.

Israeli runners Alon Peled and Ron Shilon spend almost five hours on Mt Wellington, crossing the Constitution Dock finish line at three minutes to one this morning.

Queensland catamaran BWR Multihulls came in fifth, finishing the final run leg at 3.14am.

Veteran Three Peaks runners Aubrey Hendricks and Alan Hood ran an outstanding two hours, 48 minutes in the pitch dark on the wet and windy course to claim sixth spot for Devonport’s Peter Newman and crew aboard Plan Four.

Beale 11.8 Adelie was the ninth yacht to arrive in Hobart, but a strong run from father-son team Ian and Simon Law saw the Deviot yacht pick up two places on the last leg.

Haphazard claimed outright honours in the fully-crewed division, a fitting finish for the crew that can boast more than 70 previous Three Peaks races between them.

The Radford 14 has been sailed in the most Three Peaks races of any yacht and skipper Nick Edmunds and sailor David Wright have competed in all 20 races.

Seventeen yachts have now finished the 20th Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race; five remain on the Mt Wellington run and Hobart skipper Annie McComb’s monohull Epsilon is the only boat yet to arrive at Constitution Dock.
