The 40th Windsurfing Class National Championships will take to the waters off Balmoral Sailing Club this Australia Day.
The four day event is open to Windsurfer One Design and Original Windsurfer’s across the disciplines on course racing, freestyle, slalom and marathon with Race Director, Greg Johns, expecting Sydney Harbour to turn it on.
“For the first three days we are expecting south-easterly and nor-easterly winds with 8 to 18 knots while the final day is shaping up to be a bit wild with a 20 to 25 knot southerly,” Greg said. “The overall winner will need to harness all of their sailing skills; starting, strategy, tactics, rules and have a relatively good fitness level.”
With eighty entries so far, competitors from Italy, Finland and USA will also be in attendance including an impressive women’s fleet including former Australian Olympian Jessica Crisp and former USA Olympian, Lanee Beashell.
While the action on the water is shaping up to be an international affair, onshore, Middle Harbour Yacht Club will be hosting the 40-Year Windsurfing Reunion on Friday 27 January with 150 people expected to join the celebrations. In attendance at the reunion will be an impressive list of Olympian sailors including; Greg Hyde, Bob Wilmot, Stuart Gilbert, Lachlan Gilbert, Lars Kleppich and Jessica Crisp.
“There are a lot of people coming from around the world for this reunion party and it is shaping up to be a fantastic evening of celebrations,” Event Manager Amelia Ivshenko said. “We will not only have current competitors but also competitors from the 70s, 80s and 90s.
“We have put together a slide show for the evening and will also be doing life membership presentations to those who have significantly contributed to the sport.”
Ivshenko and Niki Lammond have together organised the function and are looking forward to the celebration.
