Australian Sailing announces 2017 Instructor Conference schedule

Australian Sailing is proud to announce this year’s Annual Instructor Conferences will be presented at seven locations throughout Australia in 2017.   Hosting the conferences locally provides instructors who may not have previously been able to attend the national conference the chance to update their skills and meet other instructors closer to home.

The emphasis of each conference is to engage Australian Sailing accredited instructors through updates in the Discover Sailing program content. The Chief Instructors have developed a range of activities for the theory and practical development sessions and will discuss current trends and practice instructional skills and techniques.

This year’s shore- based activities will include an update on Australian Sailing, how to manage the behaviour of students, how to effectively debrief participants after a session and benefits of using the Australian Sailing Instructor resources.

The conference will also deliver practical sessions across the various disciplines that have a focus on delivering quality on-water sessions.  These drills include race starts for dinghies, what games are effective in Tackers sessions, ‘Man overboard’ sessions for keelboats, golden rules in powerboat handling and the basics for windsurfing lessons.

Programs Manager for Participation, Education and Training at Australian Sailing, Chris Tate, explains, “Our aim is to encourage more instructors to join the conferences around the country.  Providing our accredited Australian Sailing instructors with the chance to continue to develop their skills and knowledge, will consequently increase the standard and participation numbers of students around Australia.  It’s also a great opportunity for our instructors to meet others from the region, both to share experiences and learn from each other.”

Registration for the Instructor Conference is free with the additional opportunity (in selected regions) to attend a re-validation session.
